FC Kln), german national f..." width="300" height="300" />

His final game for FC Kln saw the team relegated, and his thank-you lap-of-honour was spoiled by scenes of unrest on the terraces. It was far from a fitting end to a career that had seen Podolski break into the Kln side at the tender age of 18, before returning to the club in 2009 after a three-year stint at Champions League finalists Bayern Munich.

The striker, who is just five caps shy of a century of appearances for Germany, definitely brings much-needed fire-power to a club with only one player Robin van Persie in double figures in the league this season. And while Arsene Wengers call for the supporting cast to step up in the final game of the season was heeded, theres little doubt that the front line needed bolstering.

But just what kind of player is Podolski, and how will he fit into the Arsenal line-up?

Well, like van Persie, Podolski finds the net with regularity. For his country, hes almost on a goal a game, with 43 goals in those 95 appearances. This season, in spite of playing for the basement team in the Bundesliga, he still managed 18 goals in his 29 appearances.

Podolski can score with both feet, although he is primarily a left-sided attacker that can run from deep midfield, take on players and unleash fierce shots, sweet volleys and cultured curlers. While not a typical poacher, Podolski can find space and play off another striker to complete moves. And while there may be similarities with van Persie, watching the talented German play shows that the two could certainly complement one another, provided the service they receive from midfield is good. Podolski is a clinical finisher, has excellent acceleration and, importantly in the English game, strength.

Since his move, many of his goals have appeared in Youtube compilations, although many of them are similar and include penalties. Podolskis movement from deep, ability to run at players, strength and instinctive finishing prowess are clear. One such example of some of his goals can be found below:

<object style=”height: 390px; width: 640px”><embed src=”http://www.youtube.com/v/OQvKnhhsboU...ailpage” type=”application/x-shockwave-flash” allowfullscreen=”true” allowScriptAccess=”always” width=”640″ height=”360″>

The biggest question seems to revolve not around Poldi, as his German fans call him, and whether or not he can play alongside van Persie, but whether or not hell get the opportunity.

If van Persie does stay, the threat Podolski brings down the left side will likely also mean more space on the right for van Persie, creating difficulties for central defenders in knowing which one to track. Like the Golden Boot winner, the German doesnt need an invitation to shoot, and will instinctively try for goal from anywhere. And while some strikers (Andy Carroll and Fernando Torres spring to mind) go through barren spells connected to a lack of confidence, Podolski is brimming with self-belief, and creates plenty of opportunities for himself and others.

Assuming van Persie stays with the club, it almost certainly means a dropping down the pecking order for Gervinho, and offers options for the club to sell some of the more peripheral forwards, such as Bendtner, Chamakh and Vela.

One has to believe that Podolski was told Arsenal are ambitious, and that the double threat he and the Flying Dutchman would propel Arsenal into the forthcoming season. No doubt van Persie was also told the signing of the German international was proof of intent, and, hopefully, the first of several new acquisitions.

Theres little doubt that negotiations are not just carried out in private. Rumours are spread in order to increase players value, and to coerce clubs into paying over the odds for services. The fact van Persie has not signed a new deal is being seen as him leaving: at this point its impossible to say. Perhaps hes waiting for new signings to occur. Perhaps hes hoping a massive performance at the Euros equates to an even better deal. In an age when we want answers now, the only thing left is speculation and reading between the lines. And, sometimes, knowing when to sell a player is as important as knowing when to buy. However, van Persie is currently an Arsenal player, and the answer to the question can he play alongside Podolski is a resounding yes. It would, perhaps, be the best strike partnership in the Premier League.

And with loanees including Joel Campbell, who spent the season at Lorient, in France, Ryo Miyaichi (at Bolton) and Benik Afobe (Reading) awaiting their chances, plus rumours of further attacking signings, the future does seem brighter than simply hoping that the Dutch Master neither picks up an injury nor goes off the boil, given the reliance upon his tally this season.

One facet of Podolskis game other clubs will undoubtedly be targeting is his renowned temper. Surprisingly, hes seen very few red cards, however, his tendency to become involved with opponents, and to retaliate, is sure to draw attention from some of the Premier Leagues finest wind-up merchants.

<object style=”height: 390px; width: 640px”><embed src=”http://www.youtube.com/v/mRumg9z2XOw...ailpage” type=”application/x-shockwave-flash” allowfullscreen=”true” allowScriptAccess=”always” width=”640″ height=”360″>

However, Podolski is likely to settle in easier than some imports to the Premier League, as there are already several players of Polish heritage, as well as international team-mate Per Mertesacker already in the fold, and this should enable Podolski to both fit in, and have some knowledge of the players hell be facing come August.

Tony Woodcock, who played for both Arsenal and FC Kln, has little doubt Podolski will make a positive impact, and most observers including former players, managers and analysts share the belief that Podolski has the potential to be an instant success.

Arsenal fans everywhere will be eagerly awaiting his debut, and doubtless shirts and souvenirs bearing his name are set to be big sellers. What they will be awaiting even more, however, is who lines up alongside him come the first day of the new campaign.

At one point he was seen riding the shoulders of a stout, balding supporter. A few minutes later he was behind the grill at Piebury Corner. Arsenal fans came and went, but Robin – still in full kit with captain’s armband – continued to mingle throughout the night, posing for photos with a smile on his face, even after one heavy-handed reveller made a tear in his cardboard left hand. They say football fans are fickle; the masses who call Arsenal by far the greatest team, a defensive nightmare, The Invincibles, mentally weak and the one team in London.

How about the players, can they not be fickle too?

This season has been heralded as the most stellar in history and in terms of entertainment, it cannot be denied. What made it so gripping then? One reason could be down to the fickleness in all of us, from the supporters to the boardroom; being a pessimist or an optimist based on one result, or even one goal. Subsequently, we become incapable of holding our tongues when waiting for an outcome, whether it is the result of a single fixture, or the season as a whole. Some warn others about minding gaps without noticing the one that lies just ahead of them. Together, it makes the end result all the more unexpected, and therefore entertaining.

We all like to make predictions and there’s nothing wrong with that, though this is not the same as fickleness. Roberto Mancini ruled Manchester City out of the title race when they fell eight points behind Alex Ferguson’s lot, only to perk up again when United let slip. Best of all had to be at the weekend, when Bolton drew level away at Stoke. Quickly, a section of Trotters fans unfolded a huge banner reading ‘THE GREAT ESCAPE.’ Perhaps the Bolton fans had misunderstood that only a win would secure safety. More likely is that genuine belief overcame what wasn’t yet a reality. By the final whistle, a new banner reading ‘WE’LL BE BACK’ took stage.

The scores of Arsenal fans who were running amok around Finsbury Park on Sunday are probably still contemplating what to make of this season. On the one hand, they will have been reading about the trophy drought, how Arsenal lost 10 games and how ineffective some signings were. On the other, they will remember the jubilant scenes that seemed to mirror what was happening in Manchester. At the top of Blackstock Road, one well-oiled fan led the good times by chasing an inflatable football wherever it was booted. Like a dog having been returned to its owners after a week in the kennels, he chased that ball, skilfully balancing a pint in one hand while dodging the traffic that came from all angles.

Inside the pub, camera phones caught the madness when the final whistle blew and third place had been cemented. Outside, people who didn’t usually smoke smoked. Horns blasted from passing traffic, buses held at red lights were invaded by excited stragglers and the Caribbean gents down at Piebury Corner swayed in perfect harmony to some soul music. Elsewhere, at the Stadium of Light, Ferguson wasnt so contented; his face priceless in thinking United had snatched the prize. On this occasion, those handful of added-on minutes down The Etihad were a cruel mistress to Fergie, the extra-time that had so often been his loving wife.

Timing can influence our take on a season, and if you’re fickle enough, then the lasting memories of Sunday will lead you to believe that, for Arsenal it had been a decent campaign. In the moment, it was difficult to distinguish exactly what success was. Gooners were celebrating like they had won the league, yet a trophy had played no part at all in the matter, just a burning rivalry with the city neighbours to see who finished third. City had pulled off a victory euphoric enough to actually make it sad, knowing that the celebrations would have to an end at some point. In contrast, Arsene Wenger’s team had piteously scrapped past West Brom, and so, wearily slumped into the corner of a Victoria line train heading home to catch the highlights, I questioned what success was? How could the success of City’s season and Arsenal’s season be separated, when the feeling of the outcome appeared to be the same?

So long as football keeps offering up moments such as Sunday, being the follower of a club struggling to be champions is easier to bear. To some degree, the weekend proved it might not even matter if you do or dont attain silverware. Sure, witnessing your beloved team win a title is captivating too, but stop and ask why? Because it gives us the right to gloat? Because some dusty history books look impressive? If your team strolled to the top every season, you would never experience true satisfaction. The quite selfish question by the end had something to do with what we search for as fans. Is it the continuous success of the club and players, or, how football makes us feel? It was apparent that you didn’t need ultimate success to end the quest.

North London was the place to be on Sunday, where the love affair with the Twelve Pins pub reached new heights. The guy who looks like Pele turned up as usual, as did the guy with ‘Fabregas … Wilshere … Wizards’ on the back of his Arsenal kit. Places like ‘The Pins’ help you to see the funny side in conceding a detrimental third goal at home to Norwich after getting ahead late on, partly because your left-back was the furthest man forward. Also, rejoice your fickleness, as quite often it’s the recipe for success, even if it might be an illusion. And if you’re not easily deceived and you see each trophyless season as a failure, then just know success was achieved the day you dolled-up in red and white, not white and blue.

True satisfaction! True satisfaction was being drenched in beer by people Id never met before. True satisfaction was watching the crowds singing, TOTTENHAM, SIGN HIM UP, TOTTENHAM TOTTENHAM SIGN HIM UP, every time that traffic-dodging K9 swung and missed the inflatable ball. Over the coming weeks many people will analyse the specific reasons for Arsenal’s success and failure this term, which will be crucial for the summer preparation. Sometimes though, we can measure success in other ways, and often it is what you make of it as a fan. Sometimes it might take detaching yourself from the club and reminding yourself that, yes, youre simply a follower, watching the game with your mates in special surroundings. Now look back and think: was that successful? The look on Robins face down Piebury corner suggested yes.

Jon Spurling

THE GUNNERS GOT AWAY WITH IT

1-0 up, 2-1 down and a (seemingly) improbable fight back… Arsenals victory at the Hawthorns may not have had quite the drama of Manchester Citys stunning fight back at the Etihad, but its importance for the Gunners cannot be overestimated.

Suicidal defending, an inability to keep possession, plenty of pretty passing and an unlikely 3-2 victory… Arsenals final league match of the campaign was an entirely accurate barometer of the clubs fortunes this season. Arsene Wengers sense of relief at snatching third place, and therefore finishing above Tottenham and guaranteeing automatic qualification to the Champions League, was palpable. After the final whistle, he said: We only lost 2 of the last 16 games, and created a fantastic run. We had problems getting over the line, and you could see that again today. We just hung on.

Arguably, his most telling admission about the 2011 2012 campaign was: At some stages, everybody was wondering what we were doing. Never was a truer word spoken.

The Gunners season began in total chaos. In July, Wenger spoke confidently of Samir Nasri and Cesc Fabregas staying in North London. The fact that both departed for Manchester City and Barcelona respectively in early August suggested that there was a widening credibility gap between Wengers promises and the actual truth.

The teams results in August suggested that Wenger might be swept away at any minute. Even Alan Hansen, not usually known for making sensationalist comments, remarked in the*Telegraph*after Arsenals 8-2 hammering at Old Trafford: One more result like this, and Wenger could be history.

The home game against Liverpool, which Dalglishs men won 2-0, was played against a backdrop of torrential rain, and rumbling thunder. It seemed ominous for the club, and after damaging defeats at Tottenham (2-1) and Blackburn (4-3) (away fans at Ewood Park could clearly be heard chanting at Wenger: You dont know what youre doing) football writer Patrick Barclay commented on Skys Sunday Supplement: I can see Arsenal in a relegation scrap, the way theyre going. The worrying thing was, none of the panellists disagreed with Barclay, and he was not taken to task by Gunners fans for his comments either. In Arsene We Rust, said one banner at the Blackburn match.

With Wilshere out injured for the foreseeable future, Nasri and Fabregas gone, and van Persie the only top striker at the club, even the most ardent Arsenal fans had to admit that between them, the board and Wenger had badly mismanaged the clubs most depressing close season for decades. The last minute spending spree in August added to the panic stations feeling surrounding the club.

Yet the team then embarked on an unexpectedly good league run. The highlight was Arsenals crazy 5-3 victory against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, which propelled the team into sixth place, having laboured in 15th*after defeat at Spurs. It was the victory at Chelsea that opened Gunners supporters eyes to the fact that, fragile as their teams self confidence was, Villas-Boas outfit was also struggling to adapt to the new coachs defensive changes. Realistically, with the Manchester teams cruising into the distance, Arsenal could only target 3rd*or 4th*place, and hope that Tottenham and Chelsea slipped up. By the time the team lost to Swansea, Fulham and Manchester United in consecutive away matches, and were then slaughtered in Milan and lost to Sunderland in the FA Cup within four days, the You dont know what youre doing chants resurfaced. Again, Wengers position seemed under threat.

Then, a miracle occurred. Arsenal won seven league games on the bounce, and came close to a sensational comeback against Milan in the Champions League. It was down to a number of factors… Henrys return, the emergence of Oxlade-Chamberlain, and the return to the team after injury of Bacary Sagna. But the truth is that Arsenals epic fight back (or is that Tottenhams staggering collapse) at the Emirates in the Gunners 5-3 home win in late February turned the season around. Had Redknapps team won that match, and gone 13 points clear in third place, its highly likely that Arsenals campaign would have gone irrevocably pear-shaped.

The Redknapp For England campaign clearly destabilised Tottenham, whatever their players claim, and the fact they lost in consecutive games to the Manchesters and Arsenal suggested Spurs werent quite as strong as the Watch the Gap yellers suggested. On April 11th, after a comfortable 3-0 win at Wolves, the Gunners were five points clear of Spurs in 3rd*place, and seemingly set to cruise to European qualification.

Over the last month, the teams early season defensive jitters (and Mikel Artetas injury) saw them go four games without a win, and witnessed Tottenham and Newcastle close the gap, leaving Arsenal requiring a win in their final game of the season to guarantee Champions League football. When it came to the crunch, Wengers man duly delivered. Just.

He admitted: I didnt want to finish 4th. If Chelsea win the Champions League then you are not in it, if they dont you are not definitely in it as you play a qualifier. The ramifications of Arsenal not qualifying for the tournament next season would have been frightening.

A minimum of 20 million less income, considerably less chance of keeping van Persie and attracting the 10 million signings in defence and midfield that the team needs, and less chance of filling the Emirates. The fact that the club wrapped up the signing of Podolski before the end of the campaign suggests that this close season might be slightly less fraught than the last one. Someone at the club at least seems to know what they are doing this time around, although without major surgery, its hard to see how Arsenal will scrap for anything other than 3rd.

The overall impression of this campaign is that the Gunners got away with it. Apart from being ridiculously over-reliant on van Persies goals, the fact is that Villas-Boas (until February) and Redknapp (after February) didnt really know what they were doing either.

Next season, having to rely on their London rivals to implode is unlikely to see the Gunners through.

Ian Palmer

2012/2013 CAN’T COME SOON ENOUGH

Regardless of whether you consider this season to be a success or a disaster for Arsenal, and I’m sure there’s going to be a lot of debate about this, the simple fact is the 2012/13 season has to begin immediately.

Its obvious that this squad has some strengths, such as Robin van Persie and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, but there are also some glaring weaknesses. These problem areas need to be addressed as soon as possible if the Gunners are to be serious contenders next year.

Yes, a third-place finish is a hell of a lot better than finishing between fourth and 20th, but lets not forget there was a 19-point gap between Arsenal and the league leaders. Wenger has already started well when it comes to strengthening the team by adding Lukas Podolski from Cologne. Podolski is a world-class striker who has to play, not sit on the bench.

Of course, van Persie also has to be retained for Arsenal to remain one of the elite teams in Europe. If he does happen to leave, Podolski is a suitable replacement. But if the Polish-born German becomes the teams only top-class striker and gets injured, theres going to be deep trouble. The two main areas that need to be improved on, though, are defending and goalkeeping.

We all know about Arsenals deficiencies when it comes to defending and thats why an elite goalkeeper is needed, at least until Wenger sorts out the defence. Wojciech Szczesny is a good keeper, but he definitely cant be considered a great one. In fact, goalkeeping has been one of the Gunners’ weak spots over the past few seasons, not just this one.

Wenger should realize how important good keeping is, since West Brom proved today that anything less can cost you games. Arsenals 3-2 win may have been deserved at the Hawthorns, but the team certainly took advantage of some atrocious goalkeeping by West Broms Marton Fulop.

Theres a lot of work to be done over the summer and it has to start immediately before other clubs start snatching up the best players available. It also includes getting rid of the dead wood at the Emirates and sorting out the payroll by cutting some players loose.

Finishing in third place will provide the fans with Champions League football next season and the club with a fatter bank account, which are both positives. There were also some other bright spots, such as the Gunners fighting their way back to take third place and van Persie winning the Golden Boot with 30 goals.

With a few more pieces added to the puzzle and making sure theyre ready to start the season in August and not a month later, theres no reason Arsenal shouldnt be a title contender next season. Wenger just needs to make sure hes not trying to stick square pegs into round holes when adding key players.

Pat Thrice

A SEASON OF SURPRISES

At 34 minutes, it seemed like the balance of power had indubitably shifted towards the white of North London. 34 minutes later, it appeared as if it had never moved. That’s how quickly Arsenal’s season had changed because if they had lost to Tottenham Hotspur – and they were already trailing 2-0 – they would have been an unassailable 13 points behind. But somehow, and dumped out of two cup competitions beforehand, they summoned extraordinary resources to not only comeback and win 5-2, but to claw back the deficit in the league table.

It many ways it was the defining match of the season – certainly, it was the Emirates Stadium’s most “signature moment” since it opened in 2006 – because it displayed the best and worst of Arsenal – their frailties and their strengths – in 90 exhilarating minutes. To be fair, there have been a lot of those matches which is why this has been such a frustrating season. Yet, for all of Arsenal’s supposed deficiencies, they find themselves in a better position than last season. Looking forward to next season and there’s a different sense of optimism and that might be down to the “panic-buys” that*Arsne Wenger made last summer. Because with it, it imbued a mental strength that was once lacking and if Arsenal can make the*necessary technical additions, they can challenge for trophies next campaign.

And that might be the biggest regret for Wenger because his team haven’t been able to exert their style on opponents as they have in the past. Wenger begrudgingly admits that*that the team is a little bit less good than last year with possession of the ball and while talk of philosophy implicitly imbues it with a kind of moral superiority that tends to irritate, but in the case of Arsenal and Wenger, it’s everything. He ended the season with*Tom Rosick orchestrating Arsenal attacks and tellingly, he opted for the fleet-footed artisan he borrowed from Chelsea,*Yossi Benayoun,*on the left, *putting an end to the mercurial three-striker tactic that he led with.

As per usual, it’s not just in attack where Arsenal have been unable to find the right balance because for the fourth season running, the defence has increased the number of goals it has conceded. But in this case, it’s not easy to recommend solutions because Arsenal are just inherently too complicated. Their*rapid and intense brand of football is resource-heavy thus creating undue strain at the back.*Wojciech Szcz?sny has been criticised in the recent run for his save percentage, 64%*(the fourth lowest in the Premier League – average 69%), but it’s down to the quality of chances Arsenal allow teams (more space, less men back, counter-attacks) thus the probability of scoring is higher. It’s evident, then, that Arsenal could improve on their organisation at the back although it’s not just a matter of the back four; the whole team is culpable. The two goals Arsenal conceded on the last day to West Bromwich Albion displayed the route of their problems as failure to press up the pitch allowed their opponents to play it from the back early and exploited spaces behind. The back-four attempted to push up and squeeze the space but the lack of pressing ultimately undid Arsenal.*Put simply, you cannot play a high defensive line without closing down because it invites the opposition to make passes through the backline.

This season has seen Wenger increasingly delegate defensive responsibilities to Pat Rice. Earlier this*campaign*that was a*necessity as Arsenal essentially required new recruits such as Per Mertesacker and Andre Santos to adjust quickly but one wonders whether the compartmentalisation had some effect on the cohesion of the team. Certainly, by separating the defenders and the attackers in training meant less time to practice moving up and down the pitch together but that*would*surely be picking at bones. Arsenal did it in their Champions League run of 2005/06 when Martin Keown was given hands-on access to improve the defence. Put simply, the strategy of relaxed pressing from the front has been all wrong. Last season, Jack Wilshere and Alex Song where able to set platform for Arsenal to press together and they were backed up by the Dutch system of “through-marking” to retain a shape. This season, there has been less structure although they began to get it right when they went on a good run towards the end of the season and especially in the 1-0 win over Manchester City where each midfielder was designated a man.

However, there are plenty of positives to take from the season too although you can’t help but not avoid the caveats. Robin van Persie has delivered on a virtuoso season, scoring 37 goals in 48 appearances although the next highest scorer behind him was Theo Walcott with 11. The winger himself has had a better season than given credit for and van Persie has taken it on himself to acknowledge that impact by the measure of his assists. Alex Song too, who has come to the fore creatively, especially when Arsenal were deprived of any first-choice full-backs and everything had to come through the middle. Backed up he has been by the astute Mikel Arteta who has in a sense, liberated him. In defence, Laurent Koscielny established his self as one the Premier League’s finest centre-backs despite the*chaos that often surrounds him while*Rosick has finally found the form he seemed to have lost five years ago.

With Arsenal, the same caveats always apply but in this season, they have become masters of the unexpected. And as such, there is always cause for hope for 2012/13.*My target is to get back to that level (The Invincibles side of 2004/04),” says*Arsne Wenger.*”I feel we are not far from coming back to fight for the championship, and let’s hope we can show that next season.

I had a birthday plan in June of last year. Champions League glory for Arsenal on my birthday, having won the Premier League title. Yeah, I am really going to enjoy today…

As the world prepares for the Champions League final this evening, Arsenal prepare for oblivion. That is the media angle and it is becoming warmly embraced by some. Robin van Persie’s failure to sign a new deal before he departed for Euro2012 is indicative of him not returning. In itself – and because of last summer – that is the signal of implosion. Theo Walcott has not signed a new deal and is apparently upset with Arsenal for not getting into negotiations before he departed for Euro2012. Alex Song is just about to enter the last year of his contract, all the good players are going, the bad ones are staying. The sky is falling in and there is a rush to descend into the madness.

Grow a set.

van Persie’s contract talks were scheduled for this week as was his departure for the Dutch squad. That left four days for Arsenal and the Dutchman to meet and discuss the contract. The presumption seems to be that it was a simple, “I’ll sign for this and three M’vila’s”; it is not that simple and with legal teams viewing the opportunity to relieve their clients of some funds in chargeable time, as unrealistic as expecting Arsenal to have completed their transfer business by now. The season has not even finished in some countries and getting players signed now, before the Euro2012 kick-off when their clubs eye the tournament as an opportunity for transfer valuations to rise, is unrealistic.

Yet still that was expected.

As for Walcott and Song, the smell of agent planted stories and journalistic creativity wafts through, luring the unsuspecting in with its decadent scent. Theo’s upset over negotiations not beginning before Euro2012? I doubt it but if he is, tough, it is his own fault for not starting them during the season. Alex Song is about to enter the final straight of a contract? And?

Agendas are being exposed.

That so many contracts are beginning to come to run their course is unsurprising. The players we are talking about have all broken into the first team around 2005 – 2007. Negotiations happened shortly after and new contracts or extensions signed. The continual process of having a young team means that these cycles happen, as opposed to buying ready-made teams of twenty-five year old – even older players – who have the contract they sign and perhaps minor extensions until their useful footballing life to Arsenal ends. If that sounds like players are assets, in the raw basics they are numbers on a balance sheet, assets that produce a revenue stream from the club’s core activity.

It does not mean bad management.

The result of the move to a new stadium, renewing the squad via a youth system means that this is the path that the club chose to tread reaching the merry-go-round at the end of the rainbow. This cycle of constant contract negotiations is going to become very familiar each summer as the deals and the players mature. When the club do enter talks and get contracts signed, they are criticised for even doing that before the focus turns onto the size of the deal. Arsenal are taking an informed punt, banking that the youthful promise will mature into an outstanding player. It doesn’t always work.

It is a process that the club cannot always control; Cesc would not have signed a new deal if offered, neither would Nasri and van Persie, Walcott, perhaps Song, are hedging their bets as is their right, waiting for a time that is beneficial to them to talk or sign deals or leave. This lays bear the hypocrisy of football supporters with claims that the loyalty shown by Arsenal to each of them in difficult times of loss of form or injury – or both – deserve loyalty from the players. Were you or I in similar situations in our own employment, I am sure that the same ‘tugs of the heart strings’ we might feel are felt by players. I am sure that the same feeling of looking after your own interests that the players feel would be reciprocated by us in our own circumstances.

Yeah, I’m a hypocrite. I expect that loyalty to exist.

I want the season to start so that there are genuine grounds for complaint, for the moaning to at least have some substance from events on the pitch. Please Mr Platini, let Arsenal enter Euro2012.

’til Tomorrow.

Filed under: Arsenal, Champions League, Football, Premier League, Soccer, Transfer Gossip Tagged: Arsenal, Champions League, Football, Premier League, Soccer, Transfer Gossip

Season Review, Midfield and Attack

<div style="width: 720px; padding: 0 18px 12px 12px; text-align: justify; border-right: 1px dotted #C0C0C0; border-bottom: 1px dotted...

Seeing as it’s Saturday 19th May and absolutely nothing is happening in football but RvP stalling on his new deal, Arsenal ruining their own summer when they should just let him go, ooooooops sorry that was supposed to be my CV for a new job at TalkShite…….. I may as well get on with my season review.

Midfielders:- Alex Song has been an almost ever present since his ban at the start of the season, he has been fantastic, a lot of people knock him but I think he’s a genius. Always covering, whenever a team breaks he is the one to stop it, countless lofted through balls, many of which have turned into goals has seen him really stand out. Of course he has his frustrating moments, sometimes he seems to go through a 10-20 minute period where he can’t put a 5 yard pass on target. Overall though he’s been top draw. Mikel Arteta came in and rescued our season, you see 90% pass*completion*week in week out, and of course he has a mean shot too, he has an*aggressive*streak and have been one of the buys of the season. It was clear to see when he got injured in the Wigan game the end of our season fell apart. He is a massive boost to have him raring to go from 9th July and will be a huge player in 12/13. Alongside these two I would hope that young Jack can make his come back, we have missed him massively, but in recent weeks Rosicky has been the one to stand in for that attacking role and he made a huge difference. He has finally found his fitness and a good vain of form. It helped us kick on as Aaron Ramsey was struggling in that position. I like Rambo but he is not an attacking midfielder, not one to sit behind a striker, he needs to focus on industry and being a hard worker, and getting his pass accuracy up, this will help him develop into a solid team player. The back heels and flicks need to stop!

Benayoun has been a good addition on loan and the fact he can also play as part of the attack would make him a good permanent signing even if we do get a first team player who can play that role. At 32 now I think Yossi would be content with a place on the bench and he can help develop the youngsters. Frimpong has made the breakthrough and was a hero at Wolves onloan, his twitter following may be bigger than his*performances*on the pitch but I do love the guy. His passion is clear and it will help him make the big step. Francis Coquelin has also made the breakthrough but I feel another Flamini coming on here. He’s done a good job covering at full back but seems to want to be a midfield regular when in truth he’s not ready yet. He has huge potential if he can be patient.

Craig Eastmond has also had good spells away on loan and the boss may need to make a*decision*about whether it is Coquelin or Eastmond who has a longer term future at the club. I like what I’ve seen from Eastmond and if Coquelin rocks the boat maybe it’s the time this summer, despite his potential to let him go. Oguzhan Ozyakup has also made a Carling Cup break through and looks the real deal, technically spot on, I’d watch out for him make moves towards the first team next season.

Diaby had another nightmare season. If the 30 or 40 minutes I saw him this season he looked like he could do really well. The fact he broke down injured again really makes it all a bit of a joke. Personal I don’t think there is room on the wage bill for him!

Clear out:- Diaby, Denilson, get them off the wage bill.
Get in:- A BIG middle man is something we’ll always crave after the impression Vieria left on us all, Yann M’Vila is the player on everyones lips. It was also be great to have an attacking middle man at the very peak of his game, someone Wilshere could learn from, you know my thoughts on Sneijder, or if not a Gotze time player. But I doubt that will happen!

Wing Men:- Theo Walcott has been the second best attacking performer this season,*consistently*supplied goals and scored them throughout the season. Why he get stick I don’t know. He misses chances sure, but you run at that pace and have a ball him at 70mph and you and see where it goes. He is vital to our team. Gervinho was the man who came in and looked so promising, it’s been in and out really,*inconsistent*is a word I think he might get labelled with. Still this was season 1, I’m hoping for more in season 2, he has the pace! Arshavin was shipped out on loan which tells you what Wenger thinks, to me he’s lazy and doesn’t contribute enough, off the field a nice guy, on it, frustrating. One who offered so much but time is up. Vela we haven’t seen hopefully we can get rid full time this summer. Ryo Miyachi looks promising but he didn’t really have an impact at Boltan, tough to know if that’s because they were a sinking ship, or whether he is a sinking ship……..

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain came in a breathed new life into the squad.*Fresh, Raw, Young talent. Can’t wait to see him develop but it’s clear he’s not ready for the week in week out action we’d like him to have. Wenger is looking after him and rightly so. He has also had a central role which would be interesting to see how that develops. A midfield with Jack and Arteta sitting behind Chamberlain could be one for the future.

Clear out:- Arshavin, Vela, both a huge waste of wages!
Get in:- We need one more, the same model, QUICK & EXCITING, Messi would do, but if not someone to complete a dynamic foursome.*

Attack:- Without question the player of the year was Robin Van Persie he was magic and carried the team through some tough moments. He’s been my favourite player since he tried to slice Graham Le Saux in half. Cost us two points but I just liked his style. He can crack a ball like nobody else and hopefully he is passed any fitness concerns. A new contract would be nice but if not lets enjoy the year! The other two have been a disaster, Chamakh and Park, embarrassing in fact. Park has looked good in the Carling Cup but has never really had a chance to impress. Chamakh has had chance after chance and just looks like he’d rather be in Movida! The benefit of those two being shit is we had Henry back and he was class, pure genius, and these goals he scored I will treasure. It’d be great to see him again in January. Bendtner has been an arogant flop at Sunderland get rid, and I don’t know enough about Joel Campbell to say, but if we ship out those three he could form part of the squad, RvP, Podolski, plus one, and Campbell………

Clear out:- Chamakh, Park, and Bendtner.
Get in:- One more would be great, Podolski is in, someone else would make it very strong.*

So as you can see I think we need players through the squad, we’ve lacked with injuries, the first XI is good enough and if we don’t sign 4 or 5 players and clear out some rubbish we will struggle next year. Not to bring doom and gloom but surely the fact we’ve relied on so few has made it clear to Le Boss we do still need re-enforcement’s. A keeper is a gimmee surely, a centre back is clear when he has Squllaci and Djourou and has turned away from both of them at times, a central midfielder Wenger must know, he’d gone off Ramsey for that attacking role blatantly and was definitely letting Rosicky go at the turn of the year so a player must have been on his mind. A winger is the least likely I suppose with three plus the potential to use Podolski will stop Wenger dipping there but if he doesn’t then he’ll need another new striker as I feel sure he’ll let Chamakh, Park, and Bendtner go.

It would be Wenger’s busiest summer if all that happened, but with third place secured, and what I am sure is a season that tested his belief in his players, I think it will be a busy one.

Lets hope we get what we need and equally shift what we need to!

- Block19er -
(Goal.com)

The 20-year-old midfielder played no part in Arsenal’s 2011/12 football season due to his ankle problem and he will go undergo more surgery in Sweden next week to solve the knee issue, which has been described as a ‘longstanding’ one by the club officials.

Wilshere’s knee injury is related to his left knee’s patella tendon and while it needs medical attention, it is not expected to scupper his plans of achieving full fitness before the start of next season.

The club issued a statement, which read: ”England international Jack Wilshere is continuing to recover very well from the injury to his right ankle which ruled him out of action for the 2011-12 season. This procedure is not expected to significantly affect Jack’s comeback ahead of next season. On returning to England, Jack will resume his rehabilitation with the Arsenal medical team over the summer.”

Ian Wright to Become MK Dons’ First-Team Coach

Arsenal legend Ian Wright will once again take over the first-team coaching responsibilities of League One outfit MK Dons after enjoying a successful stint with them last season. (Goal.com)

The former Arsenal striker coached MK Dons’ forward players last season and impressed the club officials with his work. Therefore, he has been re-signed on a part-time deal, which would allow him to keep doing his media jobs too.

Fabianski Wants to Leave Arsenal

Arsenal’s backup goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski has said that he wants to leave the Gunners in the summer due to lack of first-team opportunities. (ESPN)

The 27-year-old custodian lost his position in the starting line-up to his fellow Pole Wojciech Szczesny and as a result, he was able to play just six times for Arsenal in the 2011/12 season.

The former Legia Warsaw goalie is unhappy with the bench role and wants to depart Emirates Stadium in the upcoming summer transfer window.

In an interview with Gazeta Wyborcza, Fabianski said: “I hope that my adventure with Arsenal has come to an end. I intend to leave and play in a strong league. I wanted to leave in the winter, too, but Arsene Wenger did not give a green light.”

Arsenal Ban RVP from Talking To Press

Arsenal are so worried about Robin van Persie’s contractual situation that they have forbidden him from talking to the press while on international duty with the Netherlands squad. (The Guardian)

The 28-year-old Dutchman has linked up with his national team to prepare for the upcoming European Championships but has been told not to speak to any reporters at all.

The Dutch Football Association’s rep said: “We made a deal with Arsenal and he [van Persie] won’t talk to the press.”

Vieira Casts Doubts on Arsenal’s Ability to Re-Sign RVP

Former Arsenal captain and current Man City football development executive Patrick Vieira has said that the Gunners should have opened contract talks with Robin van Persie a lot earlier and believes that now it is too late. (The Daily Mirror)

Vieira is of the opinion that Arsenal would struggle to keep their talisman safe from rival clubs as there is only one more season left on his existing deal. The Frenchman, whose current employers are in the pole position to sign van Persie, said: “I think losing Samir Nasri and Cesc Fabregas last year was a big shock for Arsenal – and if they lose Robin this year, it will be a trauma.”

He further said: “When Samir and Cesc left, you could say, OK, but we still have Van Persie and Jack Wilshere at the club. But if Robin leaves, that means next year it may be Theo Walcott, next year its Wilshere, and its going to be difficult for Arsenal to keep their top players.

“I’m quite surprised they have waited until he has only a year left on his contract to talk to him. It’s difficult to find players of Robin’s quality anywhere in the world with only a year left – especially strikers who can score 34 goals in a season. It’s difficult to understand.

“Robin wants to win trophies – and Arsenal have to prove he can do it with them. We know that Robin loves Arsenal. That is not the question – the real question is how Arsene Wenger will convince Robin they can win trophies.”

Talkshite fuck me what a bitter little man! Did we sack him as litter picker or what?

You do realise that it’s the eve of the Champions League final? The play-offs? England are going the Euro’s? A GB team is about to be selected for the first time ever? No……… the biggest story is that the press want to speculate about what was said in over a cup of tea in Totteridge! Speculation killed the cat!

We’re told that if we don’t sell our captain it will run and run all summer just for him to leave like Cesc did, but where does it run and run? The papers…….. Talkshite……. oh well you keep printing your rubbish and chatting shit and wishing you actually new what was going on! The media doesn’t run the game, they just like to think they do, who’s the new England manager?

Of course whilst poor little Arsenal are struggling in third place, those shadow dwellers are stiffing shitting themselves that Chel$ki are gonna win the Champions League and the scum will have to sell all their big players……. LOL …….. now there’s a story worth writing about! December title contenders……… March……. in free-fall!

Or we could be Liverhoof, getting turned down by Swansea’s manager, Rodgers don’t want the poison challenge of having to play Wimbledon football to please the Kop! Calm Down!
Let van Persie leave with our blessing

Has it come to this? Very well, here goes: Its time to allow Robin van Persie to leave the Arsenal for pastures new. And we, the Arsenal masses, should wish him a fond farewell with our blessing.

Before you denounce me with venomous bile, let me clarify my position: I want RVP, our goal-scoring talisman who has spearheaded our ascent to third in the Premier League with his haul of goals, to stay at the Emirates. But not at any price either financial or emotional.

He has professed his love for the club and we know this pledge his genuine. He is about as close as one of us, a diehard fan, playing for our beloved team, as you could get.

RVP knows the responsibility of representing the Gunners. He understands the importance of his role as a vanguard, a captain and a role model. Our dazzling Dutchman has an edge to his game and when he snarls and moans and berates opposing players much as he did the time-wasting Newcastle keeper Tim Krul we know he is doing it partially on our behalf.

He acknowledges and wholeheartedly displays the necessary dismissive attitude towards the N17 mob as they bleat on season after season in a convincing effort to collectively personify delusions of grandeur. And we thank him for it.

His outrage, his desire and endeavour stir our apathy, provoke passionate support and help us believe in the cause. RVP is laying it all on the line for Arsenal. Our Arsenal. His Arsenal. Arsenal together. His commitment is unswerving.

He has been our colossus much like in recent history Tony Adams, Patrick Vieira, Dennis Bergkamp and Thierry Henry have been. He can easily live in that exulted company. He is that good. He is one of the best footballers on the planet.

And thats the point. We are not that good any longer. However much it hurts, we must accept that as fact. Despite being agonisingly close on many occasions, Arsene Wenger hasnt been able to deliver trophies for seven long years. It means, as we stand, that RVP has very few magical, victorious silverware-clinching memories to look back on when he is old and grey and asked to put his medals on the table.

If you consider that Premier League title holders Manchester City *said be one of RVP’s suitors will not rest on their laurels and will spend easily more than 100million this summer, and a wounded United and moneybags Chelsea will spend big again, what are the chances of us winning anything significant next season?

I accept all of the factors that offer perspective to the argument: the injury jinxes, the wage structure, the financial constraints in the transfer markets. But a way of illustrating my point is that we were all getting very excited at the prospect of finishing third this season. But cast your minds back a few years and it was titles, cups and doubles we collected and Euro crowns for which we competed with real credentials.

It leads me to my earlier assertion that all things being equal, we are not good enough at present. Yes, we pray that will change. But RVP may feel he hasnt got time to wait for that change. I would rather he leave now with our blessing and 50million in the bank than face another summer of tedious speculation leading the club to be held to ransom over money and us fans to be held to ransom in our hearts.

I am sick and tired of transfer tug-of-wars, fed up with long, drawn out sagas the endless drama over whether first Henry, then Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri will leave has sharpened my thinking.

Of course, I understand these matters cant be resolved overnight but surely, by now, with just a season remaining on his contract, the club together with the player should have a new contract sorted. The fact that RVP has played his cards so close to his chest speaks volumes.

We are told in the press that RVP has told Arsenal he is not ready to sign a new deal. Talks between him and the club ended in deadlock despite Arsenal offering a three-year deal worth 130,000 a week with a 5million signing-on fee.

The word is that Arsenal are adamant he will still be our player next season but that could mean that he could leave for free when his contract expires after a season in which he may well be looking to avoid injury and simply get through the year before making his move.

If he wont sign let him leave and we must thank him for his remarkable services, amazing talent and abundance of goals. Let us not remind him of the months and months he spent sidelined in our employ when he collected his money while he overcame various serious injuries. The esteem in which he is held by our fans can be no higher. Wherever he goes he will still be Arsenal. The king will be dead but, hey, long live the king could our new monarch be Lukas Podolski?

CARL ELDRIDGE Twittering @eldomedia

Ox at Euro 2012: Another Walcott?

Theo knows all about the expectations heaped on upon a youngster since he was selected to Englands World Cup team back in 2006 by Sven Goran Eriksson when he was just 17 years old.

After being left on the bench for that entire tournament, only Walcott himself knows how much, if at all, he benefited from the World Cup experience in Germany. Some experts feel Eriksson simply wasted a roster spot by taking him along while others argue that it helped him develop as a player.* Its fair to say that the jurys still out on that one since Walcott hasnt lived up to his billing in many peoples eyes.

Now its Oxlade-Chamberlains turn to feel the pressure as the 18-year-old Gunner was selected to Englands Euro 2012 squad by manager Roy Hodgson. For Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, he must be feeling a sense of dj vu by having two teenage wingers thrust into the spotlight so early in their careers.

Its safe to say that Walcotts turned into a good player over the years, but calling him a great one might be stretching it a bit. One wonders if Oxlade-Chamberlain will fare any better and if the trip to Poland and Ukraine this summer will help his confidence grow or stunt his development. Of course, he should be flying high at the moment just by being selected to the squad.

If Oxlade-Chamberlain plays and does well at Euro 2012 it could be the best thing that could possibly happen since hell know he can play against the best Europe has to offer. If he doesnt perform as well as expected it could harm his confidence to a certain degree. However, the key to his mental state of mind will lie with Hodgson.

In Walcotts case, he wasnt chosen for England again until two years after the 2006 World Cup. Not being selected for that length of time after being taken to Germany must have been a bit puzzling, but probably didnt do his confidence much damage since he didnt play poorly, simply because he didnt play at all.

If Oxlade-Chamberlain plays this summer, Hodgson needs to realize that if hes in the teams long-term plans, that no matter how well or poorly he performs, he will need to be selected to the squad for the nations next game following Euro 2012. This wont leave Oxlade-Chamberlain second guessing himself and worrying about how he played.

Being selected again right away will boost his confidence even if he has a mediocre tournament. If Oxlade-Chamberlain ends up waiting two years for his next cap, like Walcott had to do, it could seriously set him back mentally. Of course, if Hodgson doesnt consider him to be a part of Englands future, then its doubtful he would have selected him in the first place.

Hodgson called Oxlade-Chamberlain shortly before announcing the Euro 2012 squad and told him he was going to be given the chance to prove he can play consistently at an elite level. This means he should get some quality minutes in Englands two pre-tournament games against Belgium and Norway. Oxlade-Chamberlain realizes this is just the first step to a successful international career and being selected to the squad doesnt mean hes made it.

He said hes happy to be going to Euro 2012 and is looking forward to training with and learning from his more experienced England teammates. But considering Hodgsons alternate options, such as Stewart Downing, theres a good chance Oxlade-Chamberlains skill and speed will be depended on once the tournament kicks off. *The winger, who can play on either flank as well as in the middle, said hes not afraid to take players on no matter who they are. He said hes filled with youthful enthusiasm and is always trying to make something positive happen when playing. He feels his brief experience with the Under-21 team will come in handy and will help him earn his first senior cap.

Hodgson said Oxlade-Chamberlain was picked for the squad on merit alone and he wants the player to prove that taking him along was the right choice. Hes already shown with Arsenal that he can excite the crowd with his pace and work ethic and now hes likely going to be given the chance that Walcott didnt receive in 2006, by being used in a major tournament. Having Walcott alongside him to offer advice along the way could prove to be invaluable in his development as a footballer.

Euro 2012 wont necessarily make or break Oxlade-Chamberlain as a player, no matter how he performs. But its a great opportunity to prove hes got the mental toughness to deal with the outcome.

I hope it never happens, but if one day an unreasonable person puts a gun to my head and asks who Id prefer as a friend Nasri or Fbregas I think Id take the former.

Heres why – I reckon most footballers are quite difficult to get on with. All that money at such a young age must make them feel a bit too important. And the drive that gets them to the top of their sport means their minds probably dont work like everybody elses.

Early on they need to decide between friends and career. As adults they uproot their families and drag them around the world with them. And thats before we get to fidelity in relationships.

The thing about Nasri is that hes forthright and he wont sugarcoat it for Arsenal fans; he left because he wants to win trophies in a team in which more talented players would do the work for him, and was able achieve that at a club that has spent the last four years building the most expensive squad ever in English football.

Man City were always going to win the title eventually. If building a winning team is like bridging a ravine, then City have done it by filling the hole with the expensive wreckage of a succession of collapsed bridges. And sorry to get all righteous, but if you look closely at the mess you might even spot a few thousand migrant workers from India and the Philippines.

Anyway, back to our two favourite sons. Nasri like most footballers is unsentimental, disloyal and headstrong. And so is Fbregas, but at least one is honest. While Nasris agent, harbouring years of bitterness since the Marseille match-fixing scandal, was waging a personal war against Arsne Wenger, Cesc was pussyfooting us with a kind of soft strike.

Because bloody hell, that chronic hamstring knack cleared itself up pretty quick. Within days of his transfer he was on the pitch for Barcelona. And since then hes stayed fit all season, unctuously claiming his love for Arsenal, probably out of some fixation with being wanted, even by the people he stepped on.

Why am I dredging this up now? Well that is the scene that faced the manager as he planned Arsenals 2011-12 season. A flaky captain feigning injury to get a move, and one of the stars of the previous season, also desperate to leave, being used as a pawn in Jean-Pierre Berns scheme to cause as much trouble as possible for his former rival.

They were drawn out, for different reasons, and no doubt demanded all of our administrative resources. When they were finally resolved, as late as possible, we had to get to work and find replacements with the clock ticking. Yes, it was a trolley dash, but wed figured out the shopping list a long time before. Looking back, only Parks dramatic hotel raid and kidnap seems like a bit of a punt.

By this point though, the clubs youngsters were stumbling through a brutal fixture list. Udinese are formidable opponents to meet in a qualification stage that in the past had given us teams like FC Twente and Celtic. No weaker for having sold their stars, Udinese are now the third-best team in Italy.

I dont need to remind you who we had to play in the Premiership and what the score lines were in August and September. It might seem implausible to you, but we really did lose to Liverpool during those difficult weeks.

All of this losing two important players, trying to get the newer players to integrate into the side, and facing disapproval from most quarters – has made the achievements of the manager and the team since then more impressive. No, we didnt win a trophy, but I think Arsenal fans are a bit more realistic about the Premier League pecking order now.

When youre in a league with Manchester United, who are the big worldwide football brand from which they derive commercial revenue the likes of which the sport has never seen; or when youre battling Chelsea and Manchester City, who have spent the GDP of developing nations in recent years; it pays to take a little perspective.

And Im no prophet of the past. I knew the team would improve, but in October I was worried where we were going to end up. I think everybody was. Every time Wenger faced the press he was asked if he was going to resign. At one point they were wondering if he was worried about relegation. He had to cope with all that and keep the team focused on fighting its way back up the table.

Arsenal fans recognised that the situation was grave, and also responded. Whenever I was at the ground last season it felt like everyone was digging in together. In 2011-12 the stadium felt more like home than ever, to me at least.

In the end the turnaround was pretty quick. We were near the top by Christmas, but after that the injuries began to bite. We had to cope without our full-backs and their replacements for three months. Football boffins like Jonathan Wilson have banged on about how important wide defenders are, but I never took them too seriously until we had none.

Im not sure, but I think in a spending league we sit around fourth or perhaps fifth in the table behind Liverpool. Our wages are higher than Tottenhams but for Arsenal players, European football isnt an aspiration; its home. We dont well up when we hear the Champions League theme before matches; for us its just the ambient noise on another midweek evening. And its been like this for 15 years straight.

So to wrap up, I dont think footballers would make great friends, but this season more than any other rammed home the fact that in spite of all appearances they are actually human beings.
